I have seen Foxx better in other films, although he was definitely great here, but it was Jordan who really impressed me. This might be the best I have ever seen him, which is saying something considering his roles in Creed, Black Panther, and Fruitvale Station.
I really don't have any negatives to say about Just Mercy, but it's not a subject matter that I naturally gravitate towards. That will limit how much I rewatch this film, but I don't want it to sound like I didn't like Just Mercy because I was exceptionally impressed by it.
The direction from Destin Daniel Cretton was solid, especially when dealing with a subject matter like this. He managed to get the audience to feel the right emotions when they needed to, and that's important. There are few things worse than when a movie tries to make you feel a certain way, only for it to end up falling flat.
Overall, Just Mercy isn't one of my favourite films that I have seen over the past few weeks, but it's powerful performances and emotional plot points made the film impact me in a way that little else has in recent memory and I will be thinking about it for days to come.
